Eight centuries of Italien Migrations.

Vivi Felice! — Live Happily!

More than a passing adage from Domenico Scarlatti closing the preface of his Essercizi per gravicembalo, it resounds here as a call, even an urgency — one that Vincent Lhermet, in this new program, invites us to embrace as our own.

For in truth, there are two kinds of people: those who have crossed a border, and those who have not. To both, his contemporary reimagining of eight centuries of Italian migrations — breathed through the reeds of a traveling accordion — tells its intimate epics.

From the obstinate bass lines of the Italian Renaissance to the Italophile works by Ligeti; from Bach’s luminous reworkings of Vivaldi’s concertos to a mournful lamento of the 14th century; not forgetting the eternal follia — fertile soil for invention since the 15th century — unfolds a space-time shaped as a European identity.

Italy, the cultural heart of a reborn Europe, nourished the imagination of countless artists drawn to the gusto italiano. And if, across centuries, musical migrations have ceaselessly flowed from and toward the peninsula, Matteo Franceschini reminds us — through the endless cycle of a tide tinged with human breath — that this country remains, like our own 21st century, a place of
boundless inventiveness.
