Olli Koskelin

One composer, three soloists, six musicians. In Olli Koskelin’s fourth composition concert, six works will be performed, five of which are premieres.

The composition concert is a single entity with no intermissions, no long breaks between pieces, and no musicians leaving and returning to the stage. Why is this happening? This isn’t thoughtless showmanship, but an attempt to build the concert into one intense arc.

The order of performance of the compositions is also not random. The length, composition, and content of the works have determined their order within the overall dramaturgy. The concert’s theme is “Departures and Returns.” Short sections of the viola solo are played between the longer pieces. They are returns after the journey of other works has ended.

The viola solo parts create unity, and the other compositions add diversity to the overall piece. This same dualism is also present in the concert’s largest work in terms of composition and duration, “13 Haiku.”
Haiku has fascinated me as poetry and as a potential musical form. The presence and surprise of haiku, its short form, and its content that is declarative rather than explanatory can also be found in music. Also in the form of a concert.
