The Music Box concert by The Finnish Soloists’s Association (SolY) brings together objects, sounds, and humanity.

Concert features works that expand the understanding of instruments, instrumentality, and the concert situation. Everyday objects, sound-producing machines, and the human voice are woven into the traditional forms of art music—such as the song cycle and chamber music—but in a new and distinctive light.

Soprano Meeri Pulakka and pianist Mirka Viitala perform Aika-avaruutta, a song cycle composed for them by Minna Leinonen, based on poems by Suvi Nuotio: “There are five kinds of light in the world, my child says – day, clouds, moon, stars, sun…”

In the section curated by percussionist Kalle Hakosalo, everyday objects and new concepts inspire unique sound colours that have been shaped into music. Familiar percussion instruments reveal new sides when combined with natural elements and personification in works by Mioko Yokoyama, Mads Emil Dreyer, and Mark Applebaum.

Clarinetists Mikko Raasakka and Heikki Nikula perform Rebecca Saunders’ intense duo Aether, written for two bass clarinets. The piece consists almost entirely of shimmering, layered, and slowly transforming multiphonics, creating a compelling and immersive soundscape.
