In November 1901, composer Gustav Mahler happened to attend the same Viennese artists’ dinner as Alma Schindler, the beautiful daughter of a famous painter. A few turbulent months later, they were married. Mahler’s Fifth Symphony reflects the development of the couple’s love story.
