The spring season culminates in a performance of Verdi’s magnificent Requiem, with over 200 choral singers taking to the stage at the Musiikkitalo.

Principally known as an opera composer, Giuseppe Verdi showed in all his works a compassionate and understanding view of humans struggling to exist amidst the oppressive powers of society around them. In his Requiem, Verdi scaled this theme up to the infinite, showcasing human beings facing up to the cosmos itself. The best-known movement in the piece is the thunderous ‘Dies irae’ – ‘Day of wrath’, used in numerous films to underscore horror, destruction and apocalyptic moments. A complete contrast is provided by the lyrical and moving ‘Lacrimosa’ – ‘Day of tears’.

Verdi scored his Requiem for four soloists, choir and a huge orchestra, the latter capably replicated in this concert by organist Ilpo Laspas.
