Dmitri Shostakovich: Symphony No. 4 C Minor Op. 43

The Sheng is a mouth-organ like no other: it’s rooted in three millennia of Chinese culture, but in the hands of a virtuoso like Wu Wei, it speaks to the world. In 2015, Jukka Tiensuu’s Teoton explored new frontiers in Finnish music; in Stalin’s Russia, however, Shostakovich’s colossal Fourth Symphony shattered so many boundaries that the composer withdrew it for his own safety. Nicholas Collon explores both worlds without fear tonight.
