Johannes Brahms: Variations on a Theme of Joseph Haydn Op. 56a
John Adams: Absolute Jest for String Quartet and Orchestra
Ludwig van Beethoven: Symphony No. 2

Comedy is a serious business. Beethoven knew that when his ebullient Second Symphony threw the classical rule-book out of the window; and John Adams certain knew it when he transformed Beethoven’s scherzos into Absolute Jest: an uproariously inventive four-way concerto, played today by one of Finland’s most admired string quartets. They’ll certainly get the joke, and Nicholas Collon opens with Brahms’s big-hearted salute to one of music’s wittiest masters, Joseph “Papa” Haydn.
