Germaine Tailleferre: Overture
Bernd Alois Zimmermann: Oboe Concerto
Olivier Messiaen: Turangalîla Symphony

Bernd Alois Zimmermann’s oboe concerto is a tribute to Igor Stravinsky, and the soloist in tonight’s performance is our own Kyeong Ham. “Turangalîla” is a combination of two Sanskrit words meaning, among other things, time and play, but they may also be translated as a love song or an ode to joy. The breathtaking, almost one-and-a-half-hour symphony by Olivier Messiaen embraces them all.
