Josef Suk: Symphony No. 2 “Asrael” Op. 27

“Music saved me” declared the Czech composer Josef Suk, and after tragedy devastated his family, he poured all his sorrow into a symphony like no other. Huge in scale and overwhelming in its emotion, Asrael is a song of grief, love and (ultimately) hope. Nicholas Collon has paired it with Gubaidulina’s dark vision, and the fierce brilliance of Franz Liszt – played by one of his supreme living interpreters, Bertrand Chamayou.
