Felix Mendelssohn: A Midsummer Night’s Dream, incidental music

What sweeter music for midwinter than a dream of summer? Mendelssohn’s salute to Shakespeare is the perfect complement to the Cello Concerto by his great friend Schumann – two fellow-dreamers, from a deeply romantic century. The superb Norwegian cellist Trus Mork retells Schumann’s dark fairytale today; and then former FRSO chief conductor Hannu Lintu conducts the Finnish premiere of a true modern masterpiece: the lyrical, luminous Eighth Symphony by Hans Werner Henze.
