Béla Bartók: Violin Sonata No. 2 Sz. 76
Johannes Brahms: String Sextet No. 2 Op. 36 G Major

The word ‘muse’, referring to one of the gods presiding over the arts and sciences in Greek mythology, has passed into common parlance to denote a person who inspires an artist. Muses have often, but not always, been an artist’s beloved. The meditative and melancholy Second Violin Sonata by Béla Bartók is dedicated to the Hungarian violinist Jelly d’Arányi, whom he often accompanied. The String Sextet by Brahms is one of the cornerstones of chamber music literature. Hidden in the first movement are the initials of his youthful sweetheart Agathe von Siebold.
