Leevi Räsänen: the two childhoods
Aulis Sallinen: Elegy for Sebastian Knight Op.10
Karol Szymanowski: Mythes Op. 30
Joseph Haydn: Feldparthie No. 1 B Major Hob II:46

The ancient myths, with their incredible plots, symbolism and moral teachings, have done much to unleash composers’ creativity, as have all sorts of other tales. In Karol Szymanowski’s case, it was myths; the three movements of his Mythes each focus on a scene from Greek mythology. Aulis Sallinen was in turn stirred by the novel The Real Life of Sebastian Knight by Vladimir Nabokov. Memories of a particular place may also be transformed into music, as with Leevi Räsänen, who remembers his native Enonkoski in the two childhoods.
