This concert challenges the status of piano, violin and cello as the top solo instruments. Principal Flute Yuki Koyama, who designed this programme, asserts that woodwinds can be equally brilliant on stage. She supports her argument with a selection of works that showcase the agility, intimacy and unique tones of two woodwind instruments: flute and oboe. We are treated to the quicksilver runs of the Wilhelm Tell fantasia, a new virtuoso work for piano, flute and oboe commissioned from Mioko Yokoyama and the raucous Venezuelan waltz El diablo suelto [The Devil on the loose].
