Imagine an opera stage where no one knows in advance what will happen next – not even the performers. From an idea given by the audience, an aria is born that may move listeners to tears or provoke hearty laughter – and it will never be repeated.

Opera improvisation is perhaps the most demanding form of improvisation, as it combines theatrical improvisation with musical improvisation. Everything seen and heard on stage is created in the moment: scenes are performed in a classical singing style, while the performers simultaneously create the story, the text, the music and the stage expression.

This form of improvisation is interactive and highly rewarding for the audience, as spectators are able to influence many aspects of the performance – from characters and plot to themes and genre. The performers fulfil the audience’s wishes with full commitment and without restraint.

Throughout the summer, the Musiikkitalo patio sets the mood for baroque sounds. Around the Aria Borealis singing competition held in October, the atmosphere starts to bubble already between May and July. The Boreallas series of accompanying events offers a wide range of free experiences.

i>Free concerts are held weekly on the Musiikkitalo summer terrace from Thursday to Saturday throughout the summer, 29 May–1 August at 5 pm. See the full summer programme at musiikkitalo.fi/en/summer-concerts.

In case of rain, the concert will take place indoors at the Musiikkitalo Main Foyer.
