Jean Sibelius: Symphony No. 2 in D Major Op. 43

Jean Sibelius was inspired by Italy and the Mediterranean to compose his second symphony. According to his friend Axel Carpelan, he regarded the symphony as by far the best thing he had written to date. Benjamin Britten’s mournful Lachrymae quotes the lute song Come, heavy sleep by John Dowland comparing sleep to the image of death that liberates from all worldly sorrows. The soloist is the FRSO’s own principal violist Jakob Dingstad, and the conductor is the highly-talented rising star Kristian Sallinen, himself a viola player.
