Legendary Pauli Hanhiniemi and his band shine – top-class hits and lyrics with the Joensuu City Orchestra in a spectacular concert.
The star artist of Finnish popular music, Pauli Hanhiniemi, can be introduced in many different ways, but the singer-songwriter who has composed and written lyrics to hundreds of songs has received numerous awards over the course of his versatile career. Among others, he was awarded the Special Emma Award in 2020 and the Juha Vainio Lyrics Award in 2007. Now, having turned 60, Pauli is truly in the best performing and creative shape of his life.
Pauli Hanhiniemi is primarily known for the legendary hits of the band Kolmas Nainen, but his pen has also produced a great deal of other music as well as outstanding lyrics for other artists. Hanhiniemi’s lyrics are considered one of the cornerstones of Finnish rock lyricism. Bands such as Hehkumo and Perunateatteri are among his many projects. In addition, Hanhiniemi has acted in both films and TV series and has written three books.
The concert will be conducted by the well-known trombonist, conductor, and educator Antti Rissanen, familiar from television. He is one of Finland’s most respected jazz trombonists, and his artistic journey has taken him to leading institutions in both Berlin and New York. A graduate of the Sibelius Academy’s jazz department (2001) and a Doctor of Music (2015), he combines deep expertise, international experience, and an uncompromising artistic vision in an exceptional way. As a conductor and arranger, he is highly sought after among both big bands and symphony orchestras. Since 2009, he has served as the Artistic Director of The Great Helsinki Swing Big Band. As an educator, he shares his expertise with future generations at Metropolia University of Applied Sciences in Helsinki, where he works as the head of wind instrument studies in the pop/jazz department.
The Joensuu City Orchestra is the beating heart of the cultural life of North Karelia. This vibrant, skilled, and highly versatile orchestra brings world-class musical experiences within everyone’s reach in its home city of Joensuu, as well as in cross-regional and international collaborations. Artistic Director Jukka Untamala has infused the orchestra with renewed energy and brilliance. This guest performance at the Helsinki Music Centre highlights the orchestra’s new era and the joy of making music.
The concert program includes songs such as “Tästä asti aikaa,” “Elämän tarkoitus,” “Äiti pojastaan pappia toivoi,” “Hyvää ja kaunista,” “Valehtelisin jos väittäisin,” “Muutkin mokaa,” “Siipeen jos sain,” “Särkyvää” (written for the band Yö), Popeda’s “Tahdotko mut tosiaan,” “20 senttiä,” Siiri Nordin’s “Sydämeni osuman sai,” and more. The arrangements are by some of Finland’s top arrangers, including Sampo Kasurinen, Pessi Levanto, Anssi Växby, Rolf Gustavson, and Antti Rissanen.
The evening promises a brilliant showcase of Finnish popular music, featuring the charismatic Pauli Hanhiniemi, his band, and the Joensuu City Orchestra, conducted by Antti Rissanen.
