New duo works for flute, violin, accordion, voice and movement.

This concert presents a selection of Yuto Obata’s recent duo works, featuring a range of instrumental and interdisciplinary combinations, including flute duo, violin and accordion, soprano voice and alto saxophone and a work for a pianist and a dancer with multimedia.

At the core of Obata’s work is an attempt to merge distinct sound sources into a single acoustic entity. Rather than constructing relationships based on hierarchical layering – such as the distinction between primary and secondary voices common in Western classical music – his music focuses on auditory similarity or illusion through ambiguity. In these works, the listener is often unable to clearly identify the origin of a sound, as timbres overlap, merge and transform. This approach is particularly evident in his duet compositions, where the boundaries between instruments or performers are intentionally destabilised.
