Arctic Pulse presents:
Katarina Barruk and Hildá Länsman meet Norrlandsoperan Symphony Orchestra

Welcome to a concert deep-rooted in nature with music that transcends language. Experience the fusion of orchestral grandeur and traditional sámi song, as Norrlandsoperan’s Symphony Orchestra joins forces with sámi vocalists Katarina Barruk and Hildá Länsman. Icelandic conductor Bjarni Frímann weaves together a magical evening of music across genres and atmospheres.

The singer, yoiker and artist Katarina Barruk, raised in Lusspie (Storuman) and Gajhrege (Gardfjäll), is one of the few young Sámi who speak Ume Sámi fluently. With her uncompromising artistry and captivating songs, she has become an important representative of her mother tongue. This will be her third collaboration with the Norrlandsoperan Symphony Orchestra – but this time she will not be doing it alone.

Hildá Länsman is an artist, yoiker, songwriter and duojár from Utsjoki (Ohcejohka), and this concert marks her debut with the Norrlandsoperan Symphony Orchestra. She has been a leading figure in several prominent Sámi music groups, such as Solju, VILDÁ and Gájanas. Recently, she released her first album under her own name, an electronic music collaboration with the Finnish artist and producer Tuomas Norvio.

The concert and the Norrlandsoperan Symphony Orchestra are conducted by the Icelandic conductor, composer and musician Bjarni Frímann, who has already made a significant mark on the music world. In 2018, Bjarni Frímann was appointed Music Director and Conductor of the Icelandic National Opera, where he led productions such as Tosca, La Traviata, The Marriage of Figaro and Hänsel und Gretel, as well as world premieres of works by Anna Thorvaldsdóttir and Daníel Bjarnason. That same year he also became Principal Conductor of the Iceland Symphony Orchestra, and has since guest-conducted orchestras such as the Hallé Orchestra, the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin and the Orchestra Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires.
