It’s the quiet ones that you have to watch. Elgar looked like a typical English gentleman, while Brahms hid his face behind a mighty beard. Yet Brahm’s First Symphony opens with the pounding of an anguished heart, and Elgar’s Cello Concerto distills deep anguish into haunting poetry. Andrew Manze and cellist Senja Rummukainen will drive straight to the soul of the music, after a radiant opener from the neglected Finnish genius Ida Moberg.
