Francis Poulenc: Concerto for Organ G Minor FP 93
Gustav Mahler: Symphony No. 5 C-Sharp Minor

The death of a close friend and the alarming state of the world led Francis Poulenc to head in a more serious direction in his music of the 1930s. The models of his sombre, dramatic organ concerto may be sought in the German Baroque.
The fifth symphony by Gustav Mahler begins with a funeral march triggered by an iconic trumpet fanfare, yet Mahler had just got married and was enjoying the happiest days of his life. His famous Adagietto is often played at funerals, though it is in fact a love letter to his wife Alma.
